Mairead McGuinness MEP welcomed everyone to the meeting and explained that the meeting was to meet the sponsors and approve our work programme 2009/2010.

Jane Kelsey explained the operation of the group.  We hold meetings as and when an issue is relevant or a speaker is available. We will hold high level meetings that add value to MEPs and stakeholders involvement in the issues under discussion. We aim to be fully within the debate but equally thinking beyond the traditional borders of agriculture, food policy and land use. We aim to hold controversial and challenging meetings and think outside and above the debate. With a small secretariat and budget we aim to hold few but well targeted meetings.

The issues in the work programme were approved.  We will look at the interlinking policies of governance, trade, land use and food security, finance and climate change. None of these can be considered in isolation. We will contribute to the debate under discussion in the Commission and EP on financial perspectives, and the CAP reform debate.

We aim to increase our group of sponsors and will meet to discuss our work with interested companies.

We aim to hold a series of stakeholder workshops with Euractiv along the lines of their existing meetings, in the European Parliament and hosted by relevant MEPs. This will give MEPs access to opinion formers, added profile and help LUFPIG in terms of organization.

Our first meetings in November and December will be:

- A workshop on agricultural decision making and the Lisbon Treaty.

-  We have also invited Agriculture Commissioner, Fischer Boel to join us for an ‘end of term’ debate.

- In 2010 2 possible workshops are under discussion:

EU land use/bio diversity policy (possibly with Land Use Policy Group from the UK) – how to produce more on less land. =what is the link between CAP reform, land use policy choices, green/clean energy, funding and technology?

Has cross compliance worked? This discussion would aim to bring together Farmers, NGOs, stakeholder companies, MEps, Court of Auditors…

The second idea for a workshop is the issue of the precautionary principle and risk hazard who does it really protect? Why are we in a political impasse on the GMO/contamination issue? Is it ethical acceptable today? Has public opinion moved at all? Here we would aim to bring together Consumers, EFSA, retailers, CIAA, farmers, politicians.

LUFPIG accounts

Over the years the LUFPIG budget has been made up of sponsorship from companies, trade associations, unions, NGOs and banks interested in creating and maintaining an MEP led forum for debate operating within the EP on issues relating to CAP reform, and many of the issues relating to food policy and land use. The budget is used exclusively for the running of the secretariat and meeting expenses. It is in no way used for or by any individual member of LUFPIG.

In 2006-7 our budget contributions totaled €48,000.

In 2007-8 our contributions totalled €42,000

For 2008-9, the budget so far stands at €24,000

Sponsors for 2008-9 are: Cargill - 6000€, Unilever - 6000€, UNESDA and CISDA - 6000€ and ABGRI - 6000€.

The accounts are in the process of being drawn up and will be posted on this page.

Depending on the amount of the budget, it covers the costs of a part time coordinator and a full time stagiaire which usually amounts to over 70% of the budget.

The remaining monies are accounted for in the following way:

Web site expenses

attendance at conferences and travel costs

organization of LUFPIG conferences and meetings,

office equipment and miscellaneous costs.

Any further information concerning the LUFPIG budget can be obtained from the LUFPIG secretariat on 02.284.7336 or the LUFPIG treasurer, Robert Sturdy MEP on 284.7294
